Enter the RealmWelcome to Oldmadmage. I've been GMing since D&D First Edition in the 70s. While I enjoy Pathfinder Second Edition and other modern RPGs, my style remains timeless: rules-light with a laser focus on the narrative.
I believe the players are the heroes of the story we tell together. To that end, I empower you to accomplish heroic deeds, regardless of your background or character choice. We are an inclusive community that values creativity over calculation.
Everyone wants to have fun at the table so don’t be that person that ruins the experience for everyone else. Don't create personal conflicts or let disagreements escalate. Don't make personal attacks. You can disagree in character but be mindful that you share your life with your companions. Think twice before using the excuse, “but it’s what my character would do!”
Keep table chatter to a minimum during active gameplay. Trying to compete for the DM’s attention or talking over others slows things down. Everyone gets a voice so please have patience. This is especially important in combat. The GM will give the group a moment at the top of each round to talk tactics—otherwise, do not share advice during another player’s turn.
Especially during combat, following along and knowing what you want to do on your turn makes the game more fun. It helps everyone stay in character. Therefore, when it is not your turn, be thinking about what you will do so you can act quickly and decisively.
Make sure we know who's speaking - you or your character. Immerse yourself in the role and help maintain the atmosphere for everyone else.
Don't share information that you know but your character wouldn't. If you want to know if your character would know something, ask the GM using private chat. Often, you'll be able to make a skill check or research that information in-game.
You can't (and the GM won't) retract what your character has just said or done. We won't go back to your turn because you forgot about a possible action or a second attack. Commit to your choices.
You are responsible for knowing your character's abilities and the rules around them. Understand your actions and spells before coming to a session. Check with the GM on Discord in advance if you are unsure how something works.
No story is interesting if there is not real risk involved. This means accepting that sometimes you will fail a check, miss a hit, or even die. Players roll digital dice on the VTT so everyone can see the results.
In-game, the GM is the final arbiter. The GM will occasionally get rules wrong, but to prevent dragging, they will make a ruling. If you disagree, make a note and discuss it with the GM after the session.
Let's keep it welcoming. Adult themes and occasional swearing are expected, but please don’t be overly graphic or vulgar. Respect the boundaries of the table.
Do not come to the game drunk or high. Feel free to enjoy an adult beverage during the game as long as you do so responsibly.
Sessions are weekly. Don’t be late. If you must miss a session, give a few days’ notice. If you cannot make it most of the time, this is not the gaming table for you.
